A Mega Millions Jackpot of $1.58 Billion Claimed by Florida Ticket.

A potential $1.58 billion jackpot, if officially confirmed at that amount, would surpass the existing Mega Millions record of $1.537 billion, which was won in South Carolina back in 2018, as stated by the lottery officials.

The individual holding the winning ticket from Tuesday’s drawing has the option to either receive the full sum spread out over 29 years through annual payments, or they can choose a lump sum estimated at approximately $783 million, before taxes, according to Mega Millions.

The highest ever recorded lottery jackpot remains the $2.04 billion Powerball prize, which was claimed in California last year.

Several other tickets sold in the same Tuesday drawing also secured substantial prizes. Two tickets, purchased in Florida and North Carolina, won $2 million each by correctly matching the first five numbers and opting for the Megaplier feature, which requires an additional $1 purchase and is available in most states.

Furthermore, five tickets won at least $1 million by matching the initial five numbers without the Megaplier. These fortunate tickets were sold in California, Pennsylvania, Texas (with two winners), and West Virginia.

The California ticket, sold in Hilmar, is set to be valued at $3.38 million, according to the California State Lottery. This variation in prize value is due to California’s payout system, which takes into account ticket sales and the number of winners, deviating from the fixed prizes listed on the Mega Millions website.

The California lottery celebrated the win, stating on the X platform (formerly known as Twitter), “Congratulations to the BIG $1.58 Billion #MegaMillions jackpot winner in Florida. California is still celebrating because a lucky ticket sold at Super Mac Food & Gas in Hilmar matched five numbers missing just the Mega number, earning $3,383,371.”

The Mega Millions jackpot had been steadily growing over several months and had not been claimed since April 18th when it was won in New York. The upcoming Friday jackpot will reset to $20 million. Click here to know more.
